I had a fantastic dinner last week around Chelsea and after eating/drinking far beyond my limit, I decided to walk it off with some good company. Much to my delight I strolled past the SVA Theatre. One of the highlights of the theatre features a Milton Glaser sculture above it's entrance. I have read about it and watched a couple of video's that referenced the piece and I was delighted to finally get a first person glimpse.
Milton Glaser's site says this about the piece, "This 18-ft kinetic sculpture was installed top of the marquee of the SVA Theatre, on 333 West 23rd Street, on July 18th. The piece rotates in two directions every hour on the hour. At the same time, the announcement of the time appears on the marquee with an accompanying statement about the nature of time, such as this quote from Albert Einstein: "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." Above is a video of the sculpture at night with the new lighting installed.
The form of the sculpture is inspired by Tatlin's Homage to the Third Republic."
That quote still sticks in my head. "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." Elegantly simple and robust all at the same time. If you haven't seen the piece, it worth it and then support the SVA theatre and take in a show!
